About the 2021 Silver American Proof 70 Coin:
The Silver American Eagle coin was the first official silver bullion coin issued by the United States Mint. The silver eagle was first released in 1986 and was authorized by the Liberty Coin Act which was approved the year prior. The Silver American eagle coins are one troy ounce of 99.9% pure silver. The face value is $1 as issued by the Mint but is worth far more in pure silver. In addition to the bullion coin, the U.S. Mint also produced a proof version for coin collectors. The Silver Eagle has been produced at three mints over the years: Philadelphia Mint, San Francisco Mint, and the West Point Mint.
The 2021 Silver American Eagle Proof 70 coin will come in perfect Proof 70 condition graded by NGC. Proof coins graded in Proof 70 condition means it has no post-production imperfections at 5x the magnification. As with all of our PF70 coins, 2020 Silver American Eagle Proofs will be accompanied by an exclusive certification label hand-signed by former Director of the U.S. Mint, Ed C. Moy.
While the investing world looks forward to this release each new year, the coin has been primarily struck in the same fashion and with the same design for its entire 35-year tenure. Making the 2021 version unique, however, is the fact that it marks the end of what may come to be known as the Mercanti Heraldic Eagle subtype. Since its initial release in 1986, the reverse of the Silver American Eagle has featured John Mercanti’s image of a heraldic eagle bearing a shield on its chest and clasping an olive branch in its right talon and a bundle of arrows in its left. This is the last year that the reverse will feature that design.
