In 2008, follow the highly-successful 50 State Quarters program from the U.S. Mint, Congress passed the America's Beautiful National Parks Quarter Dollar Coin Act authorizing the production of the America the Beautiful coins.

The America the Beautiful coin program contains 56 all-new individual designs, including a coin for each of the fifty states, five United States territories, and Washington, D.C. The U.S. Mint began producing these coins in 2010 and plan to release five coins each year until 2021.
