Description:

History of the Coin:

The Silver American Eagle was introduced by the U.S. Mint a year after the coin was authorized by the Liberty Coin Act of 1985. The U.S. Mint produces both a proof version and  bullion version of the Silver American Eagle.

Since its inception, the Silver American Eagle has been produced in the three different mints across the United States. From 1986 to 1992 proof version of the coin were minted in San Francisco. In 1993 to 2000, Philadelphia began producing Silver American Eagle proof coins. West Point was responsible for the minting of proof coins from 2001 to 2008.

There weren't any proof version of the coin minted in 2009. When production of proof Silver American Eagles began again in 2010 they were minted in West Point.

Proof Silver American Eagle coins differ from the bullion version of the coin in that proof versions include a mintmark and have a mirror-like finish. Conversely, bullion coins don't have a mintmark and have a more flat finish to them.

The design of the Silver American Eagle is very different from that of the Gold American Eagle. The obverse of the coin features the "Walking Libery" design by Adolph A. Weinman. The same design that was used from 1916 to 1947 for the Walking Liberty Half Dollar.  This design has been a long time favorite in the history of United States coinage so its inclusion in the Silver American Eagle was a logical decision. The obverse also includes the year of minting, LIBERTY, and IN GOD WE TRUST.

The reverse of the coin is a bald eagle designed by John Mercanti. The eagle is behind a shield with an olive branch in one talon and arrows in the other. Directly above the bald eagle are 13 stars representing the original 13 colonies of the United States. The reverse includes the mintmark, weight, and nominal face value of the coin.
