Description:

About the 2020 Silver American Proof 70 Coin:
In 1985 the Liberty Coin Act was approved which lead to the United States minting its first official silver bullion coin the following year. The Silver American Eagle has been minted every year since 1986 in both bullion and proof versions. It is 1 troy ounce of 99.9% pure silver and has the face value of $1. Throughout the last 33 years, it has been minted at three different mints: Philadelphia Mint, San Francisco Mint, and the West Point Mint, where it was minted again this year.

Proof 70 condition means the coin has no imperfections post-production. Each 2020 Silver American Eagle will be in Perfect Proof 70 condition graded by NGC with each label being hand-signed by the former U.S. Mint Director Ed Moy. Ed Moy has an exclusive deal with the U.S. Gold Bureau which makes these coins even more rare.

While the investing world looks forward to this release each new year, the coin has been primarily struck in the same fashion and with the same design for its entire 35-year tenure. Making the 2020 version unique, however, is the fact that it could mark the end of what may come to be known as the Mercanti Heraldic Eagle subtype. Since its initial release in 1986, the reverse of the Silver American Eagle has featured John Mercanti’s image of a heraldic eagle bearing a shield on its chest and clasping an olive branch in its right talon and a bundle of arrows in its left. We wouldn’t be surprised if 2020 is indeed the last year Mercanti’s heraldic eagle will grace the backs of these silver investment-grade pieces.
