2020 $25 1/2 oz Gold American Eagle Proof 70 Coin Description:

History of the Coin:
Behind every coin is a story and the Gold American Eagle is storied in history. The design of the coin is inspired by the work of Augustus Saint-Gaudens who was commissioned by President Roosevelt to improve the aesthetics of American coins. The 1907 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle is one of the most sought after coins in history because of its scarcity but also because of its iconic interpretation of Lady Liberty. The Gold American Eagle that pays homage to the original Lady Liberty design was authorized by the Gold Bullion Act of 1985 and first minted in 1986. As stated in the act authorizing the minting of the coin, all gold used in the production of Gold American Eagles must be sourced from United States.

In contrast to bullion coins that are only struck once, proof coins are struck multiple times which gives proof coins a near mirror-like finish. Proof coins are generally minted in lower populations than bullion coins and those graded PF 70 are an even smaller population of Gold American Eagle coins. This lower population adds to the popularity of the coin for investors and collectors.

The Gold American Eagle is minted in four different weights (1 oz., 1/2 oz., 1/4 oz., and 1/10 oz.) that all used the same design. Lady Liberty with her flowing dress and hair is confidently striding forward with her right foot ahead of her left, looking straight ahead with a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left hand. The torch symbolizes the light and hope while the olive branch symbolizes the peace Lady Liberty aspires to bring to others.

The reverse of the coin is as equally breathtaking as the obverse. A family of bald eagles is the subject of the reverse. A male bald eagle with his wings spread wide is set to return to his nest where a female eagle and eaglet await. The design is the work of Miley Busiek who captures the majesty of the bald eagle like very few coins. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is directly above the male bald eagle while IN GOD WE TRUST is just to the right of the female bald eagle.

The Proof 70 grade means that these are the very best of the best examples of the 2020 1/2oz. Gold American Eagle. NGC has certified these coins to be in PF 70 condition and enclosed the coin in plastic slab to keep the coin from being damaged or worn from excessive handling.
