Description:

History of the Coin:

The Gold American Eagle enjoys a design that is steeped in history. It's the iconic design that has helped the Gold American Eagle become a favorite among investors and collectors. The coin itself was authorized by the Gold Bullion Act of 1985 and first produced by the U.S. Mint in 1986. As established in the act, all of the gold used in the minting of Gold American Eagle must be sourced from the United States. The coin is also minted in four different weights, 1 oz., 1/2 oz., 1/4 oz., and 1/10 oz.

Augustus Saint-Gaudens was commissioned by President Roosevelt to improve the look of American coins. Saint-Gaudens sculptures of American Civil War heroes had caught the attention of the Roosevelt who then hired him to redesign the coins of the United States. Saint-Gaudens' design of Lady Liberty is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful designs to ever grace a coin from any country. His interpretation of the fictitious person has Lady Liberty confidently striding forward, her right foot in front of her left, looking forward with a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. The torch is symbolic of the light and hope associated with Lady Liberty while the olive branch symbolizes peace.

The reverse of the coin was designed by another sculptor, Miley Busiek. The depiction of a family of bald eagles is the perfect compliment to Saint-Gaudens' Lady Liberty. A large bald eagle has his wings spread wide in preparing to return to the nest he shares with a female bald eagle and an eaglet who are patiently waiting in the nest. IN GOD WE TRUST is to the right of the female bald eagle and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is at the top of the coin, directly above the head of the male bald eagle.

Bullion coins are only struck once. In contrast, the U.S. Mint strikes proof coins multiple times to give these coins an almost mirror-like finish. The extra strikes in the production process further adds to the beauty and allure of proof Gold American Eagle coins. Each coin in the 2018 Gold American Eagle PF 70 set has been graded by an independent third party and deemed to be a perfect example of the Gold American Eagle coin. Each coin is sealed in a protective plastic slab that protects your investment from losing value to wear associated with handling the coins.
