History of the Coin: The Gold American Eagle is official bullion coin of the United States and is guaranteed by the U.S. government. The Gold Bullion Act of 1985 authorized the Gold American Eagle and stipulated that the gold used in producing the coins has to come from the United States. It also mandated that the coins needed to be alloyed with silver and copper in order to create a coin that was more resistant to wear and scuffing as opposed to 24 karat gold coins.
Perhaps the most iconic image in American coinage is used for the obverse design of the coin. Augustus Saint-Gaudens was commissioned by President Theodore Roosevelt to make American coins more beautiful and more reminiscent of the money of ancient Greeks and Romans. The result was a Lady Liberty that is majestic, symbolic, and beautiful and has become iconic in numismatics. Saint-Gaudens’s original design resulted in a high-relief $20 coin that proved difficult to mint and impractical because the coin couldn’t be stacked. A normal version of the coin was minted from 1907-1933.
Borrowing heavily and paying tribute to the design of Saint-Gaudens, the Gold American Eagle features an obverse with Lady Liberty confidently striding forward with her long hair flowing to the left side of the coin. In her right hand is a torch symbolizing the light and hope liberty provides. In her left hand she is holding an olive branch symbolizing peace.
The reverse of the coin is beautifully patriotic as well. Designed by sculptor Miley Busiek, a male bald eagle is preparing to land in the nest he shares with a female bald eagle and their young eaglet. Above the male bald eagle is UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and just to the right of the nest are the words IN GOD WE TRUST. Each Gold American Eagle bullion coin is minted in West Point, NY.
