Description:

The Gold American Eagle is the official bullion coin of the United States, first authorized under the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985 and then released by the United States Mint in 1986. To avoid confusion with pre-1933 ten dollar gold coins, bullion coins are typically described using weight. The U.S Mint offers these coins in 1/10oz ($5 face value), 1/4oz ($10 face value), 1/2 oz ($25 face value) and 1 oz ($50 face value) denominations and they are all guaranteed to contain the actual amount of gold weight in troy ounces. This set contains all four denominations.

The obverse of the coin features the design first created by the sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Saint-Gaudens is considered one of the most famous designers in American coinage after being personally chosen by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1905. His first designs appeared in 1907 on the $20 Gold Double Eagle. This design is the same one that is displayed on each coin in this 1988 Gold American Eagle Set; a full-length Lady Liberty surrounded by the sun's rays with the Capitol building at her feet. Liberty holds a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left which stands as a representation of peace.

The reverse of each coin in the set features another iconic design by Miley Busiek. This design depicts a bald eagle flying home to his nest holding an olive brand. This side also contains engravings of the coins purity, value, and initials of the designer. The motto 'E PLURIBUS UNUM' also features on this side. After an act of Congress, this original design was updated to include the motto 'IN GOD WE TRUST' on the reverse, and in 1912 the original number of 46 stars featured around the border of the obverse was increased to 48 to include New Mexico and Arizona. The same thing happened a further time to include stars to represent Hawaii and Alaska after World War II.
