Description:

In 1998, the U.S. Mint introduced a new five-year series for the Platinum American Eagle Proof coins with a unique design for the reverse each year. The Vistas of Liberty designs profiled the unique character and charisma of our Nation’s diverse landscapes, capturing the spirit and strength of America and its people.

All coins have the standard depiction of the Statue of Liberty on the obverse side and John Mercanti was the designer.

The different reverse designs are as follows:

1998 - This reverse design features a depiction of the bald eagle on the coast of New England. The eagle soars above the Atlantic Ocean, along a craggy coastline. A lighthouse completes the image, intended to represent America as a beacon to weary travelers from across the seas. The reverse design is by John Mercanti.

1999 - This reverse design features a bald eagle in the southeastern wetlands of the United States, and the eagle is shown flying above the native American Alligator. The reverse design is by John Mercanti.

2000 - This reverse design features the eagle within America’s heartland, flying above a Midwestern field. This reverse design is by Al Meletsky.

2001- This reverse design depicts the eagle in the southwestern desert with saguaro cacti, with the inscriptions in a blend of incuse and relief techniques. The reverse design is by Thomas D. Rodgers.

2002 - This final reverse design for the Vista of Liberty series features a beautiful bald eagle swooping down as a trout is leaping from a lake. The background of the scene contains a stunning view of the snow-capped mountains and trees of the American Northwest. This reverse design is by Alfred Maletsky.

All 5 years included in the Vistas of Liberty series were minted in 4-coin sets containing $10, $25, $50, and $100 denominations. All coins were minted at the West Point Mint and contain a "W" mintmark on the reverse design.
