Description:

The Silver Kookaburra is a silver bullion coin produced by the Perth Mint in Australia. The coins were first minted in 1990. The obverse of the coin features a depiction of Queen Elizabeth II while the reverse changes every year but is always a kookaburra. There is also a difference between the bullion and proof versions of the coin each year. There were no proof coins minted from 2006-2011. The Perth Mint limits the production of the 1oz Silver Kookaburra, resulting in a these coins being more collectible than other weights.

The kookaburra is a terrestrial tree kingfisher that is indigenous to Australia and New Guinea. Olly the Kookaburra was one of three mascots chosen for the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. Despite being classified as a kingfisher, the kookaburra favors eating mice, snakes, insects, and small reptiles over the occasional goldfish. The most distinct characteristic of the kookaburra is their loud call that sounds like echoing human laughter. The distinctive call of the kookaburra has been used in filmmaking, television productions, and Disney theme park attractions.

Each coin is struck from pure silver and will most likely be fulfilled with the most current year of issue.
