Claude Monet, was one of the founders of French Impressionist painting. Born on November 14th, 1840, he embraced the movement's philosophy of expressing one's perceptions before nature, particularly in landscape painting.

Monet was particularly fond of the water lillies growing in the pond of his garden in Giverny, and this love inspired several water lily series on the French estate, resulting in roughly 250 individual paintings by the end of his life, in December 1926. The painting in the background of Claude’s self-portrait is on view in all its splendour at the Musée Marmottan Monet in Paris.
