The Silver Eagle coin was first introduced on the back of the desire to sell off the silver left over from the National Defence stockpile. Each coin is minted by the U.S. Mint, which was established in 1792 and operates six facilities throughout the United States. This coin's design is based on the artwork of Adolph A. Weinman, whose design featured on the half dollar that was struck between 1916 and 1947. The words "LIBERTY" and "IN GOD WE TRUST" also feature on the obverse of the coin, cementing it as one of the great American favorites. 
The coin's reverse was designed by John Mercanti, who is the 12th chief engraver at the U.S. Mint. It features a bald eagle, with thirteen stars to represent the original colonies of the United States. This side of the coin also contains the words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," " 1 OZ FINE SILVER - ONE DOLLAR" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM."
