The History

Arguably the most collected coin in American history, the Morgan Silver Dollar is known as “The King of Silver Dollars”.  No other coin encapsulates the spirit of the “Old West” and even the spirit of America itself, as the Morgan Silver dollar.

Born from the discovery of the Comstock Lode, the largest silver strike in American history, the Morgan Dollar  was struck from 1878-1904 and again in 1921.  It provided the fuel that powered the growth of American commerce for over a half century.

Morgans were struck at five different US Mint branches: Philadelphia, San Francisco, New Orleans, Carson City, and Denver.

These big, hefty silver dollars were the desire of ruthless outlaws like Butch Cassidy and Jesse James, cattle barons, and gamblers.  When you hold a Morgan silver dollar, you hold the history of America in your hand!

The Ultimate Collecting Challenge

One of the reasons Morgans are so popular is the multiple ways you can collect them.  You can put together complete Mint Mark sets, with 5 different issuing mints, you can collect them by Mint, or you can collect them by year issued.

But the Ultimate Collecting Challenge is to assemble a Complete 96pc Collection that contains all Years and all Mints.

Why is this the Ultimate Collecting Challenge?  Mainly because we don’t know how many Morgans still exist today.  Records show that 656,911,002 Morgans were struck from 1878-1921, but mass-meltings over the years have reduced that number to a fraction of the original.  The Pittman Act of 1918 alone melted over 270 million coins.  That one melting destroyed over 41% of all Morgans minted.  Add in all private meltings when silver spiked over the years and we can see why some experts believe only around 15% of the original mintage total survives today.

Additionally, there were a few years where mintages were TINY, for example, in 1893 the mintage for San Francisco struck Morgans was only 100,000, or the 1894 Morgan stuck at Philadelphia with a mintage of only 110,000.  Simply finding these coins on the market is a rarity without even considering the coin’s condition!

The Morgan Starter Set

It could take years to assemble even a portion of a complete set and decades to acquire all 96 different Morgans.  Our buyers have been scouring the market for almost a year,  buying coins whenever they can find them.  That’s why we are proud to be able to offer a 15pc Morgan Dollar Starter Set.

But not just in any condition.  Sure we could have gone the easy route and bought Fine or Very good condition coins.  But we know you’re a discerning customer, which is why we only accepted coins graded MS63, to ensure all coins are as fresh as they were when they were struck up to 141 years ago.

Consider for a moment everything you get in this incredible 15 coin set:

  • First Year of Issue - Collectors LOVE firsts and you get one of the three 1878 First Year of Issue Morgans
  • Last Year of Issue - Along with firsts, collectors love lasts and you get a 1921-D Morgan Dollar. AND it's the only Issue from the Denver Mint!
