Description:

The Perth Mint opened in 1899 after the discovery of gold deposits in Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie and was the third branch of Britain's Royal Mint. The Perth Mint stopped making gold sovereigns when Britain abandoned the gold standard in 1931. It remained under Britain's jurisdiction until 1 July 1970, when ownership transferred to the Government of Western Australia. These days the Perth Mint makes some of the world's best known coins, including the kangaroo and koala.
