The Silver American Eagle was authorized by the Liberty Coin Act of 1985 and was first issued a year later in 1986. The Silver American Eagle is official silver bullion coin of the United States. The coin is struck as only a 1 oz coin of .999 pure silver. It is guaranteed by the United States government and has a nominal face value of $1.

The Silver American Eagle coins have been minted in San Francisco, Philadelphia, and West Point. The bullion version of the coin differs from the proof version in that the bullion version does not have a mintmark. The San Francisco mint produced the coin exclusively until 1998, when the Philadelphia Mint and West Point Mint produced the coins. The San Francisco Mint supports the West Point Mint, where most Silver American Eagle coins are created.

The obverse of the coin features one of the most popular designs in the history of American coinage, the Walking Liberty by Adolph A. Weinman. The design originally appeared on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar from 1916 to 1947. In addition to the Walking Liberty's classic design, the obverse features the year of issuance, LIBERTY, and IN GOD WE TRUST.
