History of the Coin: The Gold American Eagle was first made available to the public in 1986 after being authorized by the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985. The government of the United States guarantees the weight and purity of every coin.
The parameters set forth by the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985 include that the gold used in the minting of the coins must be sourced from the United States. It also mandates that the coins be alloyed with silver and copper to create a 22 karat gold coin that is more resistant to handling and wear. The Gold American Eagle 1/10 oz. coin is a tribute to our great country using the natural resources found within our borders.
Augustus Saint-Gaudens designed what is regarded as one of the most beautiful interpretations of Lady Liberty for a coin that has ever been created. The obverse of the Gold American Eagle is largely based on this design. Saint-Gaudens was actually commissioned by President Theodore Roosevelt to make the American coins more like that of the ancient Greeks and Romans. The result was the famous high-relief $20 coin using his Lady Liberty design that was first minted in 1907.
The modern version of Saint-Gaudens’s Lady Liberty confidently strides forward with her right foot in front of her left. In her left hand is an olive branch symbolizing peace and in her right Lady Liberty is holding a torch symbolizing the light that comes with liberty.
The design for the reverse of the coin comes from sculptor Miley Busiek. A nest with a female bald eagle and a small eaglet is depicted in the design. They are eagerly waiting the return of the male bald eagle that is direct above the nest preparing to land. Above the bald eagle is UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and IN GOD WE TRUST to the right of the nest.
