Description

Description:

History of the Coin:
The Gold Bullion Act of 1985 authorized the United States Mint to begin producing the Gold American Eagle coin. Part of the act dictated that the gold used in the production of the coins must come from the United States and the coins must be alloyed with silver and copper. The alloying of the coins is to create a more sturdy, wear-resistant coin than a 24 karat gold coin.  The 22 karat Gold American Eagle quickly gained in popularity and has become a favorite among investors.

The Gold American Eagle is a beautiful tribute to our great country and homage to the magnificent currency of the ancient Greeks and Romans. The Gold American Eagle is the official bullion coin of the United States and was first produced 1986.

In the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985 it mandates the gold used for the Gold American Eagle must come from the United States and that the gold must be alloyed with silver and copper to create a more durable, wear-resistant coin.

The design of the coin features arguable the most iconic image in all of numismatic history, Lady Liberty as depicted by early 20th century sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens.  Saint-Gaudens was a Beaux-Arts sculptor who gained notoriety from his monuments of American heroes of the Civil War.  President Theodore Roosevelt selected Saint-Gaudens to redesign American coinage. His first effort was a beautifully designed high-relief $20 coin depicting Lady Liberty that was first minted in 1907. The coin was aesthetically pleasing but could not be stacked thus thought to be impractical for commerce. The high relief version of the 1907 coin is extremely rare and highly desirable among collectors while a normal-relief version was minted from 1907-1933.

The obverse of the coin is reminiscent to Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ Lady Liberty. The full-length figure of Lady Liberty is shown with flowing long hair, with a torch in her right hand to represent the light and hope of liberty, and an olive branch in her left rand representing peace. She is confidently walking forward as the sun radiates from behind her and the Capitol building sits in the lower left corner. LIBERTY is prominently inscribed above her head.

The reverse of the coin is equally patriotic in its portrayal of the American ideal of freedom. A majestic male bald eagle, with his wings spread and talons grasping a branch, returns to his nest that he shares with a female bald eagle and their eaglet. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA spans the top of the coin while IN GOD WE TRUST is just above the female bald eagle and just below the right wing of the male bald eagle. The reverse was designed by sculptor Miley Busiek and perfectly compliments the obverse of the coin.  Each coin is minted at West Point, NY.

Why invest in the coin?
An investment in the Gold American Eagle is an investment in America. The alloying of the American gold with silver and copper make for a more wear-resistant coin that will look good for generations. The Gold American Eagle is widely traded and highly liquid making it an outstanding investment. The smaller ¼ oz. size and consequently lower price point of this Gold American Eagle make it more economical to add gold to your financial portfolio.
