Description:

In 2001 the U.S. Mint issued this commemorative coin in celebration of the proposed Capitol Visitor Center in Washington D.C. to help offset some of the constuction costs for the new complex.

The obverse features an incredibily detailed illustration of the top portion of a Corinthian column, surrounded by the inscriptions "LIBERTY," "1800," "FIRST CONVENING OF CONGRESS IN WASHINGTON," "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "2001."

The facade of the Capitol appears on the reverse, as it stood in the year 1800, with West Point's "W" Mint mark below. Additional inscriptions include "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "FIVE DOLLARS."

This coin is available from our firm in Mint State 70, graded by NGC.
